Buses leave from downtown and pass in front of the airport. The bus trip takes between an hour and a half and two hours, depending on traffic and how many people get on or off the bus during the trip. The bus costs R$5.50, and is not air-conditioned, but the seats are comfortable. Unfortunately, if the bus is full, you may have to stand for the duration of the trip.

Most of the large hotels in Recife offer packages for guests who want to spend a day in Porto de Galinhas. The packages are many times more expensive than the bus, but the trip is nonstop, and the driver might speak English (and he probably knows Porto very well).

Once the bus leaves the city, it passes through fields of sugar cane and small towns before finally arriving at the Porto de Galinhas bus terminal, situated at the edge of town. The terminal is next to a gas station, referred to as "o posto" by the locals, which serves as an important landmark. The gas station is at one end of the Rua da Esperança, Porto de Galinhas's main street. At the other end is the main plaza in Porto de Galinhas, on the beach, near the tide pools, and referred to by the locals as "a pracinha" (the little plaza). It is a meeting point, a gathering point, a point of reference, and full of bars and restaurants.
